CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — Cedar Rapids police are now investigating the death of a woman who was found in her burning condominium as a homicide.
Cedar Rapids city officials say Friday that a preliminary investigation into the death of 62-year-old Robyn Furmanski revealed the woman may have sustained a traumatic injury before the fire. The new information from the State Medical Examiner’s Office has prompted police to begin a homicide investigation.
Fire crews responded to the March 31 fire at a six-unit, three-story building behind Garfield Elementary School. The Cedar Rapids Fire Department said firefighters found Furmanski inside a unit that was ablaze. She was pronounced dead at a hospital later that day.
The occupants of the other five units were safely evacuated. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
