UPDATE: Teen has been charged in connection to fatal Eldridge accident

UPDATE: 19-year-old Bret M. Schaebauer has been charged with homicide by vehicle, which is a felony charge. He was charged Wednesday, April 13, 2016.

UPDATE: One teen is dead after a weekend accident in Eldridge. The accident happened in the early hours of Sunday, February 7, 2016.

Police say the vehicle was traveling northbound on 155th Avenue, just north of Slopertown Road when it left the roadway and entered the ditch. The vehicle struck a culvert, came to rest in a field drive and caught fire.

Police say 18-year-old Nathanial L. Johnson of Long Grove, Iowa and the driver, 19-year-old Bret M. Schaebauer of Davenport, Iowa, were taken to the hospital. Both teens were wearing their seatbelts. Their condition is not known.

18-year-old Mitchell L. Hayes of Davenport died as a result of his injuries. Police say he was not wearing a seatbelt. All three were 2015 graduates of North Scott High School in Eldridge. Counselors were made available at the school Monday.

ELDRIDGE, Iowa (KWQC) – Iowa State Patrol is investigating a single-vehicle crash that left several people injured, and the vehicle engulfed in flames.

It happened around 12:50 am on Sunday, February 7 in the 3200 Block of 155th Avenue.

Troopers say the car was traveling northbound when it lost control, went into a ditch, and hit a culvert. All three passengers were taken to the hospital. One person was later air-lifted to Iowa City with critical injuries.

Officials say at least two of the victims are in their late teens to early 20s.
