MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa Department of Transportation grant has helped a city in northern Iowa establish a night bus service.

Mason City community leaders and economic development officials hope the program will boost the local economy by helping second-shift workers commute to and from their jobs. The North Iowa Area Council of Governments currently operates buses during the day and will now offer transport running from 6 p.m. to midnight.

Pat Otto, the city’s neighborhood services coordinator and transit director, tells the Globe Gazette (http://bit.ly/1UQQcSA ) that the night buses won’t pick up riders at traditional bus stops or along specific routes. She says anyone who wants to use the night bus service can call to make an appointment and be picked up.

Night bus fare will be $2 per ride.
