BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) — Officials say 27,000 gallons of partially treated wastewater has discharged into the Mississippi River following a power outage in Burlington.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says the brief outage Saturday night caused critical water pumps to stop working. Partially treated wastewater overflowed from processing tanks at the city’s wastewater treatment plant.

Officials say 27,000 gallons discharged into the Mississippi River before the pumps resumed working.

A similar scenario on Aug. 8 caused a wastewater discharge of 22,000 gallons. DNR officials say they’re monitoring the incident.
