CLEAR LAKE, Iowa (AP) — A woman who serves as coordinator at a north Iowa animal shelter has spent several hours in jail after refusing to release a dog to its owner.
Debbie Kern of Patriots for Pets Rescue and Shelter in Clear Lake was ordered by a judge to turn over the 9-month-old shepherd mix dog to the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office. She refused to turn over the dog so it could be returned to its owner, and the judge ordered the sheriff’s office to take her into custody and hold her under no bond until the order was fulfilled.
The Globe Gazette (http://bit.ly/1LevLyb ) reports that Kern was taken to jail Monday afternoon and released by the evening.
The shelter says the dog was reportedly abused.
A hearing is scheduled Oct. 7.
